Tax Accountant
The primary responsibilities of this position are the preparation of federal and state income tax returns and quarterly estimated tax payments for Southern Company and its subsidiaries. Other responsibilities are listed below.
This position will be located in Atlanta, GA at the Georgia Power Corporate Headquarters building.
Job Requirements
Education Requirements:
- BS in Accounting required
- CPA highly preferred
Experience Requirements
- 5 years corporate income tax return preparation experience
- Utility accounting experience
- Tax research experience
- Experience utilizing tax return preparation software (preferably Corptax software)
- Advanced MS Excel skills

- Ability to apply thorough technical knowledge of income tax returns
- Thorough understanding of utility issues and accounting
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Good business judgment
- Strong organization and documentation skills
- Ability to analyze current processes, identify issues, and recommend solutions

Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Prepares federal and state income tax returns
- Prepares quarterly estimated tax payments to the IRS and state jurisdictions
- Prepares intercompany tax allocations of consolidated tax data
- Researches tax laws, determines optimum tax treatments of complex transactions and documents conclusions
- Prepares amended income tax returns due to audit settlements
- Responds to IRS and Department of Revenue information data requests
- Assists subsidiaries’ tax accounting personnel in identifying and understanding book/tax differences
