Position Description:

Position Summary

The NRAO announces a new opportunity for a Documentation Specialist at our facility in Socorro, NM. The Specialist will be responsible for production of technical documentation and the correct implementation of documentation procedures for technical projects and operations. The Specialist will review and archive documents using documentation management software, and assist or lead managers, engineers, scientists, and other subject matter experts in creating and editing documents. The Specialist will also implement proper organization of documentation, including monitoring document and product numbering assignments both in software and in a Product Tree.

The NRAO has a long history of developing new technology to enable forefront research in radio astronomy. This development occurs in a collaborative environment with technicians, hardware and software engineers, and scientists. By joining NRAO, an employee has a direct contribution to expanding the observatorys state-of-the-art facilities and equipment used by scientists around the world. Creating effective communication and documentation is a critical part of this effort.

Socorro is a small, historical town in the Rio Grande Valley, 75 miles south of Albuquerque. In addition to competitive pay, NRAO provides excellent paid time off benefits (vacation and sick leave). Job Duties Summary

The successful candidate will work both independently and with others in a dynamic team environment to document both development projects and design and operation of existing equipment or telescopes.

Functional responsibilities for this position include:

  • Create, review, edit, maintain, and update technical documentation for a wide variety of technical systems, processes, and administrative procedures.
  • Prepare documentation with minimal input (written or verbal) from subject matter experts.
  • Manage software related to the management of documentation review, archival and use in NRAO projects and operations. This includes initiation and resolution of documentation workflow.
  • Develop, use, and train others on documentation standards and procedures and use of documentation management software.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Examples of required documentation include diagrams, design drawings, engineering change orders, interface control documents, lists, manuals, plans, procedures, reports, requirements, and statements of work.

Work Environment

Most work will be performed on a computer at a desk. Some work is expected to be done in the lab or on antennas in order to document Standard Operating Procedures and other tasks performed on Observatory equipment. Therefore, the successful candidate may occasionally be required to work outdoors such as at the VLA site.

Position Requirements:

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in English, Communications, or Information Technology; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum Experience

The successful candidate should have one or more years of experience in technical writing, editing, and content creation, preferably within a technical organization like the NRAO. Must also have experience in document layout/design and template creation.

Preferred Experience

Three to five or more years of related experience and experience in the operation and administration of engineering document and drawing management software systems.

Competency Summary

The Specialist must be fluent in the English language and capable of constructing grammatically correct sentences and paragraph development. The successful candidate must be detail oriented and self-motivated with a willingness to learn. An excellent level of communication, both orally and in writing, is essential for this role and should be demonstrated with published and reviewable documentation. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Visio and Adobe Acrobat Pro required. Proficiency with LaTeX and documentation management systems is desirable.
