Position: Hospital SPD Transporter

Location: Kendall Regional Medical Center

SPD Transporter Position Summary

The SPD transporter is a qualified individual responsible in the transport of sterile instruments from the Mobile SPD to the receiving core personnel in surgery. The Mobile SPD transporter will also be responsible for the transport of contaminated instruments back to the Mobile SPD.

Job Specific knowledge

The SPD Transporter demonstrates job specific technical skills and expertise in the assurance that integrity of the transported sterile instruments is secured and maintained from the Mobile SPD handed-off to the core person in surgery.

  • Ensures the use of transport case carts are clean, sturdy and contents are free from unnecessary movements.
  • Transport case carts are kept closed and secured keeping sterile packaging and instrument containers from falling over during transport.
  • Directly transports items from the Mobile SPD to the receiving surgery core personnel to prevent sterile items from exposures to temperature changes and humidity exposures.
  • Maintains wheels of the transport case cart clean with easy maneuverability.
  • Maintains allowable number of sterile trays for transport as indicated by the safe weight capacity of the transport case cart.

Knowledge of Standard Precautions

Contaminated instruments will be transported to the Mobile SPD with the knowledge of transmission – based precautions and personal protective equipment (PPE) required and implanted as best practice.

  • Contaminated instruments from the point of use should be transported back to the Mobile SPD to prevent microbial growth.
  • Transport case carts are labeled “Biohazard Red Tag “on transport.
  • Hand hygiene before and after each case cart contact, use PPE.

Sharps Safety

Precautions must be taken to prevent sharps-exposure injuries in the transport of contaminated instruments from the dirty SPD case carts area to the Mobile SPD decontamination area.

  • Containment should be maintained during transport to prevent personnel from direct contact with dirty instruments.
  • Puncture resistant case carts should be closed on transport.

Ergonomic considerations

Ergonomic factors affecting worker safety should be considered in the transport of sterile instruments and contaminated instruments.

  • Body mechanics and safety is observed in the handling and management of transported items.

Education and training

Receive initial orientation, competency assessment and on-going evaluation.

  • Participates in required Policy and Procedure Training for departmental practices.
  • Competent and maintains safe practice in performing his/her responsibilities.

Essential Functions And Physical Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily, with or without reasonable accommodations. Incumbent must be able to:

  • Wear all required personal protective equipment (e.g. face mask, goggles, latex/non-latex gloves, etc.) for up to eight (8) hours throughout the shift
  • Stand for up to six (6) consecutive hours
  • Communicate effectively in written and spoken English with team members and customers
  • Incumbent must be free of any contagious illness and must comply with health screening requirements of the healthcare client

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends
  • Follow appropriate grooming standards; required to wear a uniform at times

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee may be required to remain in a stationary position for extended period.
